Since 1987 Elmeridge Cables Limited have been proudly involved with supplying cables to four out of the five main groups of energy, across many different industries, and were approached in 1994 to supply cables and equipment to the Southampton Geothermal energy project, which are still in use today.
Renewable Energy is energy derived from natural sources that are replenished at a higher rate than consumed. There are five main energy groups: Solar, Wind, Hydro, Geothermal, and Biofuels.
Solar is the most abundant of all the energy resources and can even be harnessed in cloudy weather. The rate at which solar energy is intercepted by the earth is about 10,000 times great than the rate in which humankind consumes energy. Solar technologies can deliver heat, cooling, natural light, electricity, and fuels for a host of applications. Solar technologies convert sunlight into electrical energy.
Wind harnesses the kinetic energy of moving air by using large wind turbines located on land (onshore) or in the sea (offshore). Onshore and offshore wind energy technologies have evolved over the last few years to maximise the production of electricity by using taller turbines and larger rotor blades.
Geothermal utilises the accessible thermal energy from the Earth's interior. Heat is extracted from geothermal reservoirs using wells or other means. Once at the surface, fluids of various temperatures can be used to generate electricity. The technology for electricity generation from hydrothermal reservoirs is mature and reliable and has been in operation for more than 100 years.
Hydropower harnesses the energy of water moving from higher levels to lower levels. It can be generated from reservoirs and rivers. Reservoir hydropower plants rely on stored water in a reservoir, or a dammed supply, while run-of-river hydropower plants harness energy from the available flow of water. Hydropower currently is the largest source of renewable energy in the electricity sector.
Bioenergy is produced from a variety of organic materials, called biomass, such as wood, charcoal, dung and other manures for heat and power production, and agricultural crops for liquid biofuels. Most biomass is used in rural areas for cooking, lighting, and space heating, generally by poorer populations in developing countries.
Most recently Elmeridge has been involved in the production and supply of power cables to a UK solar energy farm and have been involved in offshore and onshore wind farm projects, also supplying to hydropower sources within Europe.

Elmeridge Cables Limited has shown once again how versatile, flexible and knowledgeable the team are, having completed yet another bespoke cable earlier than the customer had expected. On this occasion it was an aerostat cable for the Ministry of Defence (MOD) within the original lead time of eight weeks.
Elmeridge have continued to work in many market sectors producing a very wide range of special cables across many industries, including Marine & Offshore, CCTV Pipes & Drains, Crane & Lifts and Medium Voltage (MV) & High Voltage (HV) cables.
Marine & Offshore
Elmeridge have supplied many different bespoke cables for remotely operated vehicles (ROV’s), underwater cameras, tow cables, tether cables, and can supply diverse types of umbilical cables which include power, data and fibre optics. We can produce many of these cables with our special polyurethane tested to a depth of 6,000 metres. Our CTD cables have been successful in long lengths of up to 10 kilometres and with double armour.
CCTV Pipes & Drains
Pipes & Drains have been a feature of the Elmeridge product range since 1987, producing an extremely high standard of camera and pushrod cables for this high-profile sector. Elmeridge are the only company to have designed a glass reinforced plastic (GRP) rod in a way that it can be pushed further than any other pushrod cable on the market today without breaking. The team have recently produced a fibre optic cable for the use in long culverts under London of up to 5 Kilometres in length. Many of these cables are produced in Hytrel, polyurethane (PUR), and medium density/high-density polyethylene (MD/HDPE).
Cranes & Lifts
There are many different types of crane cables on the market today, and Elmeridge have supported and advised many companies within this sector to obtain the right cable for the intended application, extending the cable lifespan from between four and six weeks to almost twelve months, seeing significant savings for our customers.
Most of these cables are produced in Ethylene Propylene Rubber (EPR), Thermal Plastic Rubber (TPR) or Polyurethane (PUR). We have produced many different flat form cables for the lift sector in polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and now we are able to produce in silicone which is flame retardant and halogen-free.
MV & HV Cables
Elmeridge has been producing MV and HV cables since the early 1990’s, originally as the sole UK representative for Ericsson Power Cables of Sweden and have continued to produce these in many different voltages from 11KV and up to 132KV ever since. The team have recently started to produce 172KV with the possibility of further increases in the future.
We have been working with companies within the renewable energy sector for onshore and offshore cables using all the following compounds: HDPE, LDPE, MDPE, Polyethylene (PE) and Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC). Cores are produced in aluminium and copper depending on customer requirements.
We also work with civil and groundwork contractors both large and small and have been successful in obtaining work with 11KV and 33KV cables over many years.
In summary
Despite current pressures of rapidly rising material costs and availability, Elmeridge have adapted to the many worldwide issues. By working with a number of long-term partners, we are able achieve shorter lead times with competitive prices.

As you may be aware, the copper markets are important to the cable manufacturing industry, so we have put together this post as we think you will also find it informative.
Mining industry professionals noted that copper prices have soared over the past few months due to a supply crunch, with analysts suggesting that global shortages are likely to continue to affect the market throughout the decade.
Numerous factors have contributed to the shortage in copper supply. These include increased demand, primarily driven by the reopening of China following the lifting of restrictive measures, efforts to transition to a greener economy, as well as increasingly challenging supply streams in South America. Peru’s copper mines were hit hard by protests last month, affecting exports to copper-intensive economies. It should be noted that the South American nation is the world’s second-largest copper producer, accounting for 10 per cent of the world’s copper supply.
However, political instability has seen a decline in the grade of copper, whose effects are already evident in Chile, the world’s largest copper producer, accounting for 27 per cent of the global supply. Chile recorded a drop in copper output due to lacklustre ore grades, reporting a year-on-year decline of 7 per cent in November, with analysts estimating that it will likely produce less copper within the next two years.
Against this backdrop, copper is expected to take on a bigger role over the next decade, putting a further strain on the current shortage which are increasing year by year.
It has been mentioned that the current shortage could last until 2030, reinforcing the need for additional sources for the sought-after mineral (copper).
What is more copper is set to undergo a generational shift in demand as decarbonisation efforts continue to increase, renewables will result in a greater demand, which means that copper metal price is bound to increase further.
Copper is typically used in the manufacturing of conductors as a component in the cable industry. Also, semi-conductors, and batteries for the electric vehicle market, but if we look at the decarbonisation net zero energy transition, copper is the new oil.

PANZERA was conceived in 2009 by two founding partners from Sydney Australia, inspired to create contemporary versions of classic, “vintage style” watches.
The original design objective was to capture the soul of classic watches and incorporate contemporary features – from revised size, clearer dial designs, through to the latest mechanical movements, case materials and modern-day functions.
The first PANZERA watch model to be produced was the Flieger 47 in 2010 and was an accurate homage to the original 1930’s “Flieger” pilot watch.
Since these early days, PANZERA progressed to creating its own new and contemporary designs and the brand has grown exponentially. PANZERA has now sold more than 200,000 watches into more than 100 countries around the world.
Every watch upholds the common theme of a powerful bold design that makes a strong statement wherever it is worn.
A primary advantage of being in the EU is participation in the single market, which allows companies to buy and sell goods across borders without being subject to any limits or tariffs. By leaving the EU, the UK is no longer part of this single market.
Fortunately, the two parties reached a trade deal so they can still trade without tariffs. This deal, known as the Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA), lays out the terms for the trading relationship between the UK and EU market going forward. The TCA seeks to keep the terms fair for both parties, so both the UK and EU had to agree on shared social, environmental, employment standards and regulations.
The TCA implements new rules of origin, which specify that only originating products will qualify for tariff-free trading. Originating products include goods that are wholly produced within the UK or EU and products that include components from other countries but are sufficiently transformed to become an originating product. Note that while tariffs don’t apply to originating products, other taxes, like custom duty charges, may still apply in certain cases.
The manufacturing sector was used to components moving back and forth between the two territories during the manufacturing process, although originating products crossing the border aren’t subject to tariffs. However, the added paperwork has motivated manufacturing companies to alter their supply chains. In January 2021, immediately following the TCA deal, goods exports from the UK to the EU fell by over 40%, imports from the EU fell by nearly 30%.
Much of the debate over whether to stay in the EU or leave was centred on how Brexit would affect UK businesses. Now, post-Brexit, we are beginning to have a clearer picture of both the challenges and opportunities created by Brexit. However, it’s worth noting that the global pandemic and the war between Ukraine and Russia has also affected many aspects of the economy, so not all the changes we’ve seen in 2020, 2021 and 2022 can be solely attributed to Brexit. In the coming year, we will gain an even clearer picture of Brexit’s long-term effects.
On the other hand, companies in the UK must also contend with some new challenges caused by Brexit. By far, the biggest challenge imposed by Brexit is its global mobility limitations. Brexit brought an end to the free movement of people and goods across UK/EU borders, making UK companies subject to immigration and trade regulations.
Some companies have had to rethink their supply chains and recruitment strategies considering these new complications. Of course, the pandemic and the invasion of Ukraine has added its own challenges, making this feel like a time of upheaval for many companies, and whilst Elmeridge are not immune to these changes, we continue to trade across Europe and the wider world.

Elmeridge Cables Limited would like to explain the global supply chain issues, and how this effects every business reliant on sourcing materials and compounds used in manufacturing from around the world.
Due to the pandemic that saw repeated and extended periods of closure for many non-critical manufacturing businesses, high demand across many sectors caused difficulties and delays in the fulfilment of orders once lockdowns were lifted.
In addition to the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, on the 24 February 2022, there have been further supply chain disruptions worldwide, which continue to have a negative impact on the global economy, production, and trade. This has also led to soaring inflation resulting in higher costs.
The effect on the United Kingdom of leaving the European Union has been a factor with border controls, added paperwork and logistics restrictions.
These separate global events all play a role in how we as a business, and our own supply chains, are exposed to higher risks and vulnerabilities. In a global market, businesses are increasingly interdependent, which is not always understood by the end user (the customer).
If understood, these are often totally ignored by procurement departments demanding even quicker delivery times and longer payment periods, which is almost unachievable under these current conditions, when in fact validity times for quotations have now come down to days, not weeks or months, and payments for materials such as copper and compounds are expected to be paid for in advance.

Elmeridge celebrate another special birthday on 11 May 2022 after 35 years of continued service!
Elmeridge first opened their doors for business back in 1987 by the owner and Managing Director Des Smith, whilst only in his mid-twenties, having already worked in the cable industry for BICC at Chessington and EB Communications Cable Division, who had links to Lynenwerk in Germany, Ericsson Power Cables in Sweden, Norsk Kabel Fabrik of Norway, and RTC in France.
During 1987 it was deemed to be a difficult time to open a new business due to the economics considerations of a UK recession. In fact, Des was advised by other directors within the cable industry not to go ahead, some even going as far to say the new business wouldn't survive six months.
Nevertheless, Elmeridge quickly established a reputation for excellence and service, whilst many of those companies mentioned above are no longer trading.
Elmeridge aim to offer the same exceptional service for years to come and would like to take this opportunity to thank all their customers for their valued support over the last 35 years.
Elmeridge continually expand their product range to ensure existing and new customers get the most up-to-date materials and technologies available to power their businesses and industries.

The importance of protecting our established name and excellent reputation within the special cable industry has always been paramount, and as such we thought we'd share the link below for your reading:
In a globalized world, there is no room for falsehoods that mislead our customers and the entire market. May justice be done.
The Elmeridge Cables Limited team, congratulations on your stance, you are great references for me! Keep positive!
Since last publishing the LME Historical Prices back in March 2021 (you can read the full article further down our timeline), Elmeridge has taken a closer look at the copper market.
Between 12th March 2020 and 24th March 2020, copper was at $4900 dollars per metric tonne. We see from the new graph below that copper has peaked at $9800 per metric tonne and has stayed in the $9000’s on a mean average throughout 2021.
It is now on a steady increase; copper has risen by approximately 21% during this year.
The world is at risk of running out of copper amid a widening and greater demand, along with a broader economic recovery, demand for copper is also being boosted by its vital role in a number of rapidly growing industry sectors, such as electric vehicle batteries and semiconductor wiring. Greener initiatives create a higher demand for this red metal (copper).
Political instability in Chile, where much of the world’s copper is mined, this will also contribute to this increasing problem. China is stockpiling its copper to obtain higher prices and greater profits, this only means one thing, higher copper prices for the future.
Prices are predicated to hit an all time high of $20,000 dollars per metric tonne by 2025.
To avoid likely price increases we strongly advise that you place your orders with us at the earliest opportunity.

Elmeridge Cables Limited have been leaders in the production and distribution of custom-made cables since 1987, supplying a wide range of low, medium and high voltage special cables and stock items to a growing worldwide market.
Elmeridge continue to supply a full range of single conductor double armoured CTD (conductive, temperature, and depth) cables. Also known as Data Logging Cables in long continuous lengths of up to 10,000mtrs.
Our range of single core cables have 2 layers of GIPS (galvanized improved plow steel) armour wires.
The cables have been produced without any grease or oil used on the armour wires, although this can be added if required, and we are able to provide single continuous lengths of up to, and including, 10 kilometres.
We use polypropylene (PP) for insulation material instead of high density polyethylene (HDPE). PP is more flexible and has a longer life expectancy than HDPE, which ages quickly, hardens and cracks over time. PP also has the same electrical properties and resistance as HDPE.
Our current lead time for these cables is 12 to 14 weeks.
ECL believes that with their production knowledge and expertise, help your cables achieve a longer lifespan.

Elmeridge Cables Limited are please to announce an exclusive agency agreement with Protect-Net UK Ltd, the UK and Ireland distributor of all Poly-Net® protective and packaging products.
Elmeridge have been leaders in the production and distribution of custom- made cables since 1987, supplying a wide range of low, medium, and high voltage special cables, and as such understand the importance of protective packaging.
This agreement means that Elmeridge, who have their UK office in the south of England, are now the official Southern UK Agent for Protect-Net UK.
Des Smith, the Managing Director of Elmeridge Cables says, “We are pleased to have been chosen as Protect-Net’s Southern UK Agent. The Poly-Net® protective products are versatile in protecting items from damage during storage and transportation, and whilst they are well suited for special cable accessories, they are also ideal for the manufacturing and engineering industries in general. We look forward to representing Protect-Net UK.”
Protect-Net UK was established in 2019 by Anne Esson, based on her own 21 years of machining manufacturer experience supporting the offshore oil and gas sector.
Anne says, “Appointing Elmeridge as our Southern UK Agent has come at the right time for the business. We have a long-standing business relationship, forged over the past 15 years whilst I was working in the oil and gas industry, and I knew that they were the right fit for the business to help expand our sales efforts across the UK. We have had several recent successes, securing contracts in the UK and Ireland, and having identified opportunities for our product range in other business sectors, including precision engineering, I realised that there was a need to have a stronger presence in England.”
Elmeridge Cables Limited have been leaders in the production and distribution of custom made cables since 1987, supplying a wide range of low, medium and high voltage special cables and stock items to a growing worldwide market.
For almost three and a half decades, Elmeridge have predominantly been designing, producing and distributing low voltage custom made cables, for the following sectors and industries, including:
Underwater Marine & Offshore Pumps & Sensors Oil & Gas Pipes & Drains CCTV Pushrod and Crawler Cables Cranes & Lifts Diving Fish Farming & Fisheries Medical & Science Railways & Trams Instrumentation & Control High Temperature & Thermocouple Aerostat (TARS)
We have supplied many underwater Marine and Offshore companies with our ‘Supreme Polyurethane’ which is Hydrolysis, UV, and Abrasion resistant.
This particular compound is incredibly tough, while remaining flexible, and can be ordered in various colours.
Elmeridge have produced 3 compounds that are termite-proof; our 3 cables spent 54 days in laboratory conditions in a termite mound with no adverse effects.
Compounds tested were Hytrel, Polyurethane, and Polyethylene.
Here are a few examples of special projects which we have been able to work on over recent years:
Elmeridge were able to supply the Spanish Navy with a 40-tonne breaking strain cable with the use of Kevlar aramidic yarn and two contra-helically wound layers of Nitronic 50 steel wire armour.
We have produced Rodent-resistant cables that were used in the Hong Kong Rail and underground system prior to 1st July 1997, before Chinese Rule.
Our pushrod cables for the Pipes & Drains sector have proved to be the toughest on the market today. With the rod cables in various sizes being pushed further than any others. We have worked in the sector for almost 30 years supplying some of the top companies in the UK.
Elmeridge have been asked to supply various cables over the years to F1, using compounds such as Hytrel for single core cables in many different colours. Their existing camera cables t were breaking down, and Elmeridge were able to provide a solution to prevent vibration degradation.
Elmeridge have produced a single 5km length of buoyant fibreoptic cable with a breaking load of 750kg, to view the condition of the culverts under London.
Elmeridge were asked to produce a 36-core umbilical cable for a ship’s radar system that could be flexed when traveling under bridges, without damaging the system and signal.
Elmeridge have been asked to produce two silicone cables for a medical company, the final solution was to place both cables together and produce one cable to minimize the diameter and to be as flexible as possible.
Elmeridge are capable of supplying many different types of Sensor Cables, some of which have vent tubes inside of various sizes.
Elmeridge had a great opportunity at the end of 2019/2020 to work with the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), supplying 8,000mtrs and 10,000mtrs of CTD (Conductivity Temperature and Depth) Cables for the RRS James Clark Ross and the RRS Sir David Attenborough.
RRS Sir David Attenborough
Our current lead times for production are approximately 8 to 10 weeks, depending on the specification and elements required.
A recent project for the Royal Air Force was to supply a high-grade circular copper braid with a clear PVC sheath. This braid was attached to the aircraft during refuelling to prevent a build-up of static electricity, reducing the fire hazard by grounding out the aircraft.
Elmeridge have produced more than four thousand different types of special cables since 1987.

Elmeridge Cables Limited have been leaders in the production and distribution of custom-made cables since 1987, supplying a wide range of low, medium and high voltage special cables and stock items to a growing worldwide market.

Copper is the new oil...

Elmeridge are delighted to announce that the Australian watch brand PANZERA have generously donated another watch from their stunning Aquamarine collection for our Easter prize draw.
The watch up for grabs this time is a brand new Aquamarine 38, with a second interchangeable strap in stainless steel, together worth almost £500! A perfect gift to yourself or another.
Simply visit elmeridge.com and enter your company or business email address in the popup box and click or tap ‘I Want To Win’.
Good luck,

So, what does Brexit mean for Elmeridge Cables Limited and other UK companies?

Since 1994 Elmeridge have been fulfilling MV and HV cable orders for 3.3kV, 6kV, 10kV, 11kV, 12kV, 15kV, 20kV, 22kV, 30kV, 33kV, 45kV, 66kV, 123kV, 132kV and more recently up to 400kV, and can supply triplex cables.
Elmeridge have added a range of accessories to meet the demands of the MV and HV cable market in XLPE, up to and including 132kV.
Did you know Elmeridge's MV and HV cables are used across many sectors and industries around the world? These include Marine & Offshore, Oil & Gas, Ports & Harbours, Power Distribution, Utility Companies and both onshore and offshore Renewable Energy.
You may also be interested to know that anything from Elmeridge's MV and HV cable range can be supplied in various compounds:
Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC)
Cross-Linked Polyethylene (XLPE)
Polyethylene (PE)
High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE)
Rubber (EPR)
Conductors can be supplied in Aluminium or Copper (stranded or solid).
Armour wires come in Aluminium, Galvanised Steel Wire and Galvanised Improved Plow Steel.
Elmeridge have produced armour wires in Nitronic 50. All armour wires can be produced in multiple layers if required.
More recently, Elmeridge have completed an 11kV project in the Southwest of England, which consisted of 20 drums of different length 3 core 50mm² copper power conductors, each drum being uniquely marked to ensure they all arrived at the correct location across the site for deployment. Just another small example of how the Elmeridge team goes that bit further to assist customers.
The lead time to produce this large quantity was just 16 weeks from the date of order. Elmeridge are very confident in their ability to take orders for MV and HV cables and complete the deliveries within the current lead time of approximately 16 weeks.

Supply Chain Issues
We wrote a piece on the copper market back in October 2021 titled Copper the Red Metal, which you can find on our website here: elmeridge.com/news-updates/

Happy 35th Birthday Elmeridge Cables Limited.

In a globalized world, there is no room for falsehoods that mislead our customers and the entire market. May justice be done. The Elmeridge Cables Limited team, congratulations on your stance, you are great references for me! Keep positive!
Copper the Red Metal

Supply of Medium & High Voltage Cables...
Elmeridge Cables Limited (Elmeridge) have been leaders in the production and distribution of custom-made cables since 1987, supplying a wide range of low, medium and high voltage special cables and stock items to a growing worldwide market.
One of Elmeridge’s many strengths is their commitment to cable technology research and development. For more than 35 years Elmeridge has successfully strived to develop more reliable and effective ways to meet the technical and practical demands of their customers.
Earlier this year we officially added Medium Voltage (MV) and High Voltage (HV) cables to our range. However, we want to reassure our customers that we have in fact been meeting the demands of MV and HV cable production since 1994.
The first order back then was for a 12KV cable, and the team have continued to produce 33KV, 66KV, and 132KV cables throughout the decades right up to our most recent order earlier this year.
Our range includes products for the subsea cable sector, used widely for renewable energy for offshore windfarms sea to shore power supply.

Underwater Marine & Offshore
Pumps & Sensors
Oil & Gas
Pipes & Drains CCTV Pushrod and Crawler Cables
Cranes & Lifts
Diving
Fish Farming & Fisheries
Medical & Science
Railways & Trams
Instrumentation & Control
High Temperature & Thermocouple
Aerostat (TARS)
