colby electrical

Situation

Colby Electrical came to Elmeridge with a requirement to replace a damaged, existing 4 core 16mm2 steel wire armoured cable. The cable they were currently using was undersized for their power application and had recently failed. They required one length of 2000 metres of a 4 core 35mm2 cable with a steel wire armour, suitable for constant submersion and as robust as possible.

Solution

Firstly Elmeridge had to confirm that the project was possible, by arranging the hiring of special handling equipment to allow safe moving and packing, as the drum would weigh 5,940kg. We proposed a cable with cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) insulation, galvanized steel wire armour and a polyethylene outer sheath. These materials would ensure a high level of strength and robustness, suitable for subsea use.

Result

Colby Electrical needed the cable delivered to a remote location on an exact date, as installation was dependant on a favourable tide. Elmeridge delivered on the date promised, ensuring no installation time was wasted and no additional costs incurred.

The customer comments, “We are delighted with the service given by Elmeridge on this demanding contract. We had to order the most suitable cable for the job and ensure it arrived on time and in a package which suited the installation method. From the offset Elmeridge were proactive with helpful engineers providing prompt, accurate advice and information as requested by ourselves/our clients. This service allowed us to: a) order a one-off powered cable drum stand to exact measurements for installation on a sea-going pontoon, b) install the cable on programme and with tides as requested, c) to deliver a quality product to our client which other suppliers/manufacturers could not deliver or were not interested in delivering, d) complete the contract on time.
